Non-custodial bitcoin mixers

How key-preserving mixing works, why it removes exit-scam risk, and the trade-offs you accept in return.

The coordinator never holds coins

A non-custodial coordinator matches participants and assembles an unsigned transaction. Every user signs only if the outputs are correct, so the coordinator can stall a round but can never steal from it. That single property is why non-custodial designs dominate the top of every serious 2026 ranking.

Costs are structural, not extractive

Whirlpool charges a fixed pool fee that gives unlimited free remixes; Wasabi charges roughly 0.3% of the mixed amount above a threshold. In both cases you also pay ordinary miner fees, so mixing during a quiet mempool is materially cheaper.

Known limits

You need a compatible desktop wallet, some patience, and discipline afterwards: mixed outputs must never be merged with unmixed ones. Non-custodial mixing also cannot change chains — if you want value to leave the Bitcoin ledger entirely, you need a bridge-based service.
